Inspirational Women in Computing
5.30pm for 6pm start, Thursday, 15th October 2009, Informatics Forum, University of Edinburgh
Are you an undergraduate or postgraduate student studying a computing related subject? Or a young professional working in IT?
The Edinburgh University Hoppers group (http://hoppers.inf.ed.ac.uk) is inviting you to an evening with inspirational women in computing on 15th October 2009!
Our main speaker is Karen Winney from Procter and Gamble. Karen is the Business Services Director, where she heads IT and shared services for the UK, Ireland and Nordic. She will be sharing her experiences in working as a senior manager in the IT industry. In addition, Karen Petrie, from Dundee University, will also be present to talk about her experience working in academia, as well as her role as President of the BCS Womens group. We also have three further speakers; each from Barclays Capital, Procter and Gamble and Google.
In addition, the evening will include with a panel session on "computing careers for women" - where you can ask our speakers their top tips for achieving career success!
As if that's not enough, there will also be a free buffet dinner, plus networking drinks kindly sponsored by Procter and Gamble, Barclays Capital and the School of Informatics.
Please join us for an evening of inspirational talks and engaging discussions to help you get the job that you want! Places are first come, first serve!
The Edinburgh University Hoppers is the name of the “support group” for Women in Informatics. The group was named after Grace Hopper – a pioneer in Computer Science who invented the compiler. Alongside this, there are also the Scottish Hoppers and the Biannual Hopper Meets over in the U.S. – all of which celebrates women in Computing. The main point is to create an environment in which women feel supported and part of Informatics even though statistically, there are only 10% of us.
We have 4 events planned for the coming year. We have a Lab lunch
planned on 23rd Sept, and a careers event planned on 15th Oct. Our
careers event is very popular, and this year, we have Karen Petrie (President, BCSWomen and Dundee University), Karen Winney (Procter and Gamble), plus two additional speakers from Google and Barclays Capital. In the second semester we will have another lab lunch and a "How to apply for Postgraduate study" event. Our events are open to female students from all Universities - not just Edinburgh. Drop by on our website (http://hoppers.inf.ed.ac.uk) to find out more details!
